Although there are many different successful institutions in the UK Film Industry, some independant and some more widely known, I think that the most influential insitution in the UK Film Industry is Working Title Films. Working Title Films production company in the UK, they are a company that produce both feature films and television productions.
I think that Working Title Films is the most influential institution in the UK as in spite of the fact that it was a small company with very humble beginnings, it has become a global success and now produces films for Universal Studios, one of the six major movie studios in the world, but Working Title maintain their independence with film production. This is why it is a highly influential British film institution.
Another factor as to why I think it is very inflential is because of their unexpected success from the very beginning of the company. For example, their first major success was 'Four Weddings And A Funeral', starring Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell. The film became the highest-grossing British film in cinema history at the time, with worldwide box office in excess of $245.7 million. The film also received four BAFTA wins at the 1995 BAFTA Awards. Beating films such as Forrest Gump which in comparison were expected to be front runners as they had a much larger budget of $55 and were distributed by Paramount Pictures compared to the $4.4 million budget of Four Weddings And A Funeral and their distribution being by Rank Film Distributors, a small London based company. The success of this film is impressive for Working Title and showed their potential to be essential to the success of the UK film industry.
Working Title Films is an important institution for the UK film industry as it has helped take UK films worldwide and has shone a light on the British talent in the industry. As a company, tehy have been most successful with films that are very stereotypically 'British' with 'British' characters and humour that is popular overseas. Films such as, 'Billy Elliot', 'Love Actually', 'Johnny English','Bridget Jones's Diary' and 'About A Boy' have been very successful globally, particularly in the US.
I think that Working Title Films are a widely ackowledged production company and their maintained independence but global success makes them a highly influential and essential institution for the success of the UK film industry.
